Time to revamp our website with a new wider format, photos, simpler organization and easier reservation form. We enlisted friends, neighbors and even a guest as volunteer models. Professional photographer, Joey Libby, set up some great shots and made the effort a lot of sun for all of us. We are going through boxes of fire logs as guests really enjoy the fireplaces and whirlpool tubs in the winter wonderland that is Beacon Hill this winter. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts Stretches a New Canvas

Need another great excuse to visit Boston this November? The Museum of Fine Arts is opening their brand new Art of the Americas Wing on November 20th. Over 500 million dollars was raised for this enormous project that will add over 50,000 square feet to the now sprawling institution. The addition will house 53 new galleries, including the Linde Family wing dedicated entirely to contemporary art, and the Ruth & Carl J. Shapiro Courtyard.

The Charles Street Inn is only a hop, skip, and a jump away from the MFA--less than 2 miles.

Now that the weather in Boston is cooling down, our fireplaces are heating up. Our 9 guest rooms each have their own wood-burning fireplaces. After a couple years of using Duraflame logs, we discovered the Java Log. These coffee-based logs burn cleaner, longer, and brighter than sawdust based logs. They're also eco-friendly! Head of the Charles Regatta this Weekend!

It's been a very busy fall this year in Boston! This weekend we have another wonderful Boston tradition: The Head of the Charles Regatta!

The Head of the Charles Regatta is the world's largest two-day rowing event. Regattas are generally 3 miles long and the winners are awarded the title of "Head of the River." More than 8,000 athletes from around the world come to Boston to compete in 55 different race events.

Holidays in the City

I remember the first time I saw the building at 94 Charles Street, the townhouse that is now the Charles Street Inn. It was after a Nor’easter, the street bathed in white, and the whole scene looked like something out of Dickens: piles of fresh snow, gas lamps alight, the sidewalks shimmering red brick where they had been shoveled, people hurrying with life’s daily business. It had a look and a feel unlike any other American city I had seen. A few years later, when we began creating the inn, it was that feeling and elegance we tried to capture. I still think the holidays are the best time to experience the beauty of city life in Boston.

Like many of you, I love the holidays, the chance to gather with family and friends, to reflect and celebrate our time together. For those coming to Boston for family gatherings or having family visit from far away, we hang out our welcome sign to you all! There’s nothing like a fire on a cold day, or a cozy gathering with friends in the comfort of one of our rooms. But I also know the strain of the holidays— running over hill and dale to spend the requisite half hour with every living relative, packing kids and gifts and heading out into what one hopes will remain a small, isolated snow squall. Yes, holidays can bring a special stress all their own. So when you’re ready to get away for a night— maybe when you need that night away— come check out our reasonable mid-week rates, or extend for an unwinding weekend. Soak in the whirlpool tub, relax in front of the fire. Let those shoulder muscles relax, the ones that usually stay tense through March. We hope we can serve folks who need a short break from the holidays as well.

Speaking of the holidays, if you haven’t heard, Bob Dylan has released a holiday album. No, seriously! An interesting segue into the last third of life, I’d say. If there was a “voice of a generation” for my (boomer) generation, it would have to be Bob; not that I ever cared for his voice, but his ability to simultaneously lead and sum-up the mood of American youth in the sixties and seventies was almost uncanny. So Dylan is in Boston for a series of concerts, November 13, 14, and 15.

The Celtics are back and bringing it on the hardwood again this season. They’ve added perennial NBA bad-boy Rasheed Wallace (older and wiser, the bean-town media assures us!). Their November opponents at the Garden include the brash, young Atlanta Hawks, the Phoenix Suns, the Magic and the 76ers. Later in the season, don’t miss big battles in Boston against the Cavaliers (now with Shaquille O’Neal) and the defending champion Lakers of Los Angles.

Well, it’s late on Halloween as I wrap this up, and the Hill is crawling with ghosts and ghouls— children and adults alike. People here go to great lengths decorating their homes with colored lights, long strands of cotton cob webs, and all manner of rubber bats, spiders and other Halloween ickies. For me, I love to take in the electric atmosphere of the city and the way it blooms with each new season.

Theater happenings in Boston

Hi Everyone,

As dong things outside becomes less attractive, the theater scene in Boston really heats up, and I wanted to take a second to highlight a couple choice events.

Just wanted to report about a GREAT and unusual night of theater I had last weekend. SLEEP NO MORE, the American Repertory Theater's collaboration with London's Punchdrunk Theater is unlike anything I have ever seen before. The companies have taken an old school and created an entire world based on Shakespeare's MACBETH that you can walk around in. You are, at times, shoulder-to-shoulder with the actors as they act out, largely wordlessly, the scenes from the play. So the show is like a puzzle--you might see a middle scene first, or say, as I did, Lady Macbeth freaking out in her room, agonizing over the murders committed by her husband. Then you might take in the scene of King Duncan arriving at the Macbeth's, portrayed as a gala complete with a dance number. You put it together as you go, as you take in the experience unfolding all around you. The "sets" (rooms) are done in 1920s style, and the evening has an eeriness that takes over as you step into this strange new world. A total theater immersion, Shakespeare meets David Lynch with a little Hitchcock thrown in. It plays through January 3, so there's plenty of time to come in for a night of unforgettable theater. Also coming up is Broadway's Avenue Q. Every been watching one of those talking puppet shows with your kids and thought that someone should make a hilarious adult puppet show? Well, Avenue Q is that show! It's on Nov. 17-22nd at the Colonial down in the theater district, and would be a great night out--a chance to cut loose a bit and enjoy a little irreverent adult fun.

Otherwise, things are going strong here at the inn. Man, we have been PACKED, as anyone who has recently called for a last-minute room knows. But never fear! Things loosen up a bit in November, so if you're thinking about coming down for one of the upcoming shows (and the two above are only two among many), we've got you! A little fire in the fireplace, a little vino, a nice dinner, a great show, then back to the romantic confines of the inn for...whatever. Sounds like a good night to me!

The Glass Flowers collection at the Harvard Natural History Museum has awed visitors form all over the world with its remarkably beautiful and intricately accurate display of flowers. CAMBRIDGE - An aquarium of a different sort is on display at the Harvard Museum of Natural History.
Sure, there are small sea slugs, prickly sea cucumbers, a floating jellyfish, and an octopus - tentacles curled around his red and yellow body.
But these creatures aren't just behind glass - they are glass.
The creatures were created more than a century ago by a father and son who made incredibly accurate models in a time before scientists had the Internet, video, or even color photography to aid their research.
"It's incredible," said Chris Roberts, a graduate engineering student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as he walked through the displays. "I don't know how they could have had that control with melted glass."
The "Sea Creatures in Glass" exhibit is the first time the museum has displayed part of the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology's collection of more than 400 animals made in the mid-1800s by German artists Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka. But for years, the natural history museum has shown an even larger collection of their work, the thousands of models of glass flowers Harvard commissioned.
Both collections were created to help scientists and students study far-flung or hard-to-preserve plants and animals in three dimensions. And it's obvious why the Blaschkas' work became popular among universities and museums.
When preserved in formaldehyde, for example, marine invertebrates often lost their color and shape. A sea cucumber might look like a jaundiced blob.
But the Blaschkas' version still looks alive more than 100 years later, with glass spikes jutting out of a rust-colored body.
"That's a very dramatic example of how the models enabled study and investigation in a way that the specimens could not," said Elisabeth Werby, the museum's executive director.
Leopold Blaschka and his son, Rudolph, were the last in a line of family jewelers and glassmakers dating to the 15th century in Venice. Beginning in 1863, Leopold began to create the marine invertebrate sculptures in his workshop near Dresden, Germany.
The sculptures were sold through a scientific catalog to organizations throughout the world.
Then in 1886, Harvard first commissioned the men to create the vast collection of glass flowers. The Blaschkas spent 50 years creating flowers for Harvard. After Leopold died, Rudolf continued the work.
After a renewed interest in their work with animal models, the museum decided to showcase them along with the glass flowers, Werby said.
"When they opened the drawers [of animals] to show me and the exhibition team, we were just astounded at the beauty and diversity of them, as if someone came upon the glass flowers for the first time," Werby said. "There were drawers and drawers of just extraordinary specimens."
Werby said the appeal of the Blaschkas' models is that they intersect art and science. A sea jelly model may be scientifically accurate, but it's also beautiful, with tentacles made of tiny beads of clear and gold colored glass catching the light.
"No matter how jaded people are, they come in and their jaws just drop," she said.

December is exhausting! Too many holiday parties, school/club/religious events, and too much shopping. Time out! Even a one night stay at The Charles Street Inn can help you regroup, reconnect and revitalize in order to enjoy this festive time of year. We had a delightful group of guests the night of the Holiday Stroll, December 6 with several taking in the fabulous Boston Pops concert, another thoroughly enjoying the new Tuscanno Restaurant nearby. One couple with four teen children had tickets for the Neil Young concert, but lost track of their 12 year old while Charles Street was abuzz with "strollers", carolers, and sleigh rides. We even notified the Boston Police, but his family caught up with young Tim in time to make the concert and a late dinner afterward. The Celtics are red hot, and we have had a number of visitors take in a game and dinner before or after. Many just choose a quiet dinner nearby at Bin26Enoteca, No. 9 Park or 75 Chestnut, then relax and catch up in front of the fire in their room. Sure, there are scores of concerts, large and small scale theater performances, and museum exhibits; but most people really need a break from the endless Holiday calendar of events.
